Three JS Demo: The Solar System
The Solar System is a vast and complex system that consists of the Sun, eight planets, numerous dwarf planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and other small bodies. It is located in the Milky Way galaxy, about 25,000 light-years from the galactic center, and spans an enormous distance of over 9 billion kilometers (5.6 billion miles) from the Sun to the edge of the Kuiper Belt.
The Sun is the central and most massive object in the Solar System, accounting for more than 99% of its total mass. It is a massive ball of plasma that produces light and heat through nuclear fusion in its core. The eight planets of the Solar System are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The four inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, are small, rocky, and relatively close to the Sun, while the four outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, are much larger, gas giants, and located much further from the Sun.
In addition to the eight planets, the Solar System also contains numerous dwarf planets, such as Pluto, Ceres, Eris, and Haumea, as well as many moons, asteroids, comets, and other small bodies. The asteroid belt, located between Mars and Jupiter, is a region of the Solar System that contains many small, rocky bodies, while the Kuiper Belt, located beyond Neptune, is a region that contains many small, icy objects.
The Solar System is also home to a number of important space missions, such as the Voyager spacecraft, which explored the outer planets and provided valuable information about their composition and environment, and the ongoing New Horizons mission, which is exploring the Kuiper Belt and providing new insights into this remote and mysterious region of the Solar System.
Mercury
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and is also the smallest planet in our Solar System. It is named after the Roman messenger god because of its rapid orbit around the Sun.
Mercury has a rocky surface, similar to that of Earth's Moon, and is heavily cratered due to its lack of atmosphere to protect it from impacts. Its surface is also marked with cliffs, mountains, and valleys, with some of the cliffs being more than a mile high. Interestingly, the temperature on Mercury varies greatly, ranging from over 800 degrees Fahrenheit during the day to below -290 degrees Fahrenheit at night, due to its lack of atmosphere and slow rotation.
One of the most interesting facts about Mercury is that it is the only planet in our Solar System to have a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance, meaning it rotates three times for every two revolutions it makes around the Sun. This results in each Mercury day being equivalent to two Mercury years.
Despite its small size, Mercury has a magnetic field, although it is much weaker than Earth's. The planet also has no moons or rings, and has been visited by only two spacecraft: Mariner 10 in 1974 and 1975, and the MESSENGER mission in 2008, which orbited the planet for four years before crashing into its surface.
Venus
Venus is often referred to as Earth's sister planet, as it is similar in size and composition. It is the second planet from the Sun and has a thick atmosphere mostly made up of carbon dioxide, which produces a strong greenhouse effect that makes it the hottest planet in our Solar System, even hotter than Mercury.
The surface of Venus is mostly made up of volcanic rock, with large shield volcanoes and hundreds of thousands of smaller volcanic features scattered across its surface. The planet also has no tectonic plates, which means that its surface is not actively recycled like Earth's.
One of the most interesting facts about Venus is that it rotates in the opposite direction to most of the other planets in our Solar System. This means that its day, which is longer than its year, is the equivalent of almost 117 Earth days. Additionally, Venus is the brightest object in the night sky after the Moon, and has been known since ancient times.
Venus has been visited by many spacecraft, including the Soviet Venera and Vega missions, as well as NASA's Magellan mission, which used radar to map the planet's surface. Despite these missions, much of Venus's surface remains shrouded in thick clouds, which make it difficult to study.
Earth
Earth is the third planet from the Sun and is the only known planet in our Solar System to support life. It is a dynamic and constantly changing planet, with a diverse range of environments that range from the depths of the ocean to the peaks of the highest mountains.
The planet is mostly covered in water, with approximately 71% of its surface covered by oceans, and the remaining 29% made up of continents and islands. Earth's atmosphere is mostly made up of nitrogen and oxygen, which provides the necessary conditions for life to exist.
Earth has a magnetic field, which protects it from the harmful effects of the solar wind, and its rotation on its axis gives us our day and night cycle. Interestingly, the length of a day on Earth is gradually increasing, with the planet's rotation slowing down by approximately 1.8 milliseconds per century.
One of the most fascinating features of Earth is its biosphere, which is the part of the planet that supports life. It is made up of all living things, as well as the environments they live in, such as forests, oceans, and grasslands. The biosphere is interconnected, with each living thing playing a role in maintaining the delicate balance of life on our planet.
Earth has been studied extensively, with countless missions to space and the development of sophisticated technology allowing us to better understand the planet's processes and history. However, there is still much to learn about our planet, and ongoing research and exploration will continue to uncover new information and insights.
Mars
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is often referred to as the Red Planet because of its reddish appearance in the night sky. It is a small, rocky planet with a thin atmosphere, and is often the subject of scientific interest and exploration due to its potential to have once supported life.
Mars has a surface that is similar in appearance to the deserts of Earth, with rocky terrain and vast stretches of sand dunes. It is also home to some of the largest volcanoes in the Solar System, such as Olympus Mons, which is three times the height of Mount Everest.
One of the most interesting features of Mars is its ice caps, which are made up of both water ice and carbon dioxide. These ice caps undergo seasonal changes, growing and shrinking depending on the planet's position in its orbit.
Mars is also home to many deep canyons, such as Valles Marineris, which is the largest canyon in the Solar System, as well as many impact craters, some of which are so large that they have their own weather systems.
Mars has been the subject of many space missions, with the most recent being NASA's Perseverance rover, which landed on the planet in February 2021. The rover's mission is to search for evidence of ancient microbial life and to collect samples that will be returned to Earth for further study.
Jupiter
Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System, with a diameter of approximately 86,881 miles (139,822 kilometers), which is more than 11 times the size of Earth's. It is a gas giant planet and is composed mostly of hydrogen and helium. It is the fifth planet from the Sun and is known for its great red spot, a giant storm that has been raging on the planet's surface for hundreds of years.
Jupiter is also known for its many moons, with over 80 known satellites orbiting the planet. The four largest of these moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, are known as the Galilean moons, after the astronomer Galileo Galilei who discovered them in 1610. These moons are each unique in their own way, with Europa being of particular interest to scientists due to the possibility of it having a subsurface ocean.
Jupiter has a strong magnetic field, which is more than 20,000 times stronger than Earth's. This magnetic field traps particles from the solar wind, creating intense radiation belts around the planet. These radiation belts can be hazardous for spacecraft and for any potential future human missions to the planet.
Jupiter has been visited by several spacecraft, including NASA's Juno mission, which is currently in orbit around the planet. The mission aims to study the planet's magnetic field, atmosphere, and interior structure, and is expected to provide new insights into the formation and evolution of the planet.
Saturn
Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and is known for its beautiful rings, which are composed of countless individual particles of ice and rock. It is a gas giant planet, similar in composition to Jupiter, and is the second-largest planet in our Solar System.
Saturn has a unique atmosphere, with swirling clouds and storms that can reach speeds of up to 1,100 miles per hour (1,800 kilometers per hour). The planet is also home to many moons, with over 80 known satellites in orbit around it. Titan, one of Saturn's largest moons, is of particular interest to scientists because it is the only moon in the Solar System with a dense atmosphere.
The rings of Saturn are one of the planet's most striking features. They are made up of millions of individual particles, ranging in size from tiny dust particles to large boulders. The rings are believed to be the remnants of a moon or other object that was destroyed by Saturn's gravity.
Saturn has been visited by several spacecraft, including NASA's Cassini mission, which orbited the planet for 13 years before intentionally crashing into Saturn in 2017. The mission provided scientists with valuable data and insights into the planet's atmosphere, rings, and moons.
In addition to its scientific significance, Saturn is also a popular target for amateur astronomers due to its beauty and prominent rings. The planet is visible to the naked eye from Earth and can be observed through a telescope or binoculars.
Uranus
Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and is the third-largest planet in our Solar System. It is an ice giant planet, with a composition that is different from the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn. Uranus is unique in that its axis of rotation is tilted at an extreme angle, nearly 98 degrees, causing its north and south poles to point almost directly at the Sun at different times of the year.
Uranus has a blue-green color, caused by the presence of methane in its atmosphere. The planet is also home to at least 27 known moons, the largest of which is Titania. Uranus also has a system of rings, which were discovered in 1977 by astronomers observing the planet from Earth.
Uranus has been visited by only one spacecraft, NASA's Voyager 2, which flew by the planet in 1986. The mission provided valuable data and insights into the planet's atmosphere, rings, and moons, including the discovery of ten new moons that had not been previously observed.
One of the most interesting features of Uranus is its extreme axial tilt. This tilt is thought to have been caused by a collision with a large object early in the planet's history. The extreme tilt also causes strange seasonal variations on the planet, with each pole experiencing 42 years of continuous sunlight and 42 years of continuous darkness during the planet's 84-year orbit around the Sun.
Neptune
Neptune is the eighth and farthest known planet from the Sun, and the fourth-largest planet in our Solar System. It is an ice giant planet, similar in composition to Uranus. The planet was discovered in 1846 after astronomers observed small perturbations in the orbit of Uranus, leading to the prediction of the existence of another planet beyond it.
Neptune has a blue color, caused by the presence of methane in its atmosphere, which absorbs red light and reflects blue light. The planet is also home to at least 14 known moons, the largest of which is Triton. Triton is of particular interest to scientists because it is the coldest known object in the Solar System, with surface temperatures that can drop as low as -235 degrees Celsius (-391 degrees Fahrenheit).
Neptune also has a system of rings, which were discovered in 1989 by the Voyager 2 spacecraft, the only spacecraft to have visited the planet. The rings are believed to be made up of dust particles and small rocks, and are much fainter than those of Saturn or Uranus.
Neptune is a dynamic planet with strong winds and storms, including the Great Dark Spot, a massive storm system that was observed in the planet's southern hemisphere in the late 1980s. The storm has since disappeared, but other storm systems have been observed on the planet.
Ceres
Ceres is a dwarf planet located in the asteroid belt, a region of the Solar System between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. It was discovered in 1801 by Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi and is the largest object in the asteroid belt, accounting for about one third of its total mass.
Ceres has a diameter of about 940 kilometers (585 miles) and is composed of rock and ice. Its surface is heavily cratered, and it has several large mountains, including Ahuna Mons, a tall volcanic mountain that is the largest such feature in the Solar System.
Ceres is also home to many bright spots, which were first observed by the Dawn spacecraft, the only spacecraft to have visited the dwarf planet. The bright spots are believed to be deposits of salt or other reflective materials, and may be evidence of past or present geological activity on the planet.
One of the most interesting aspects of Ceres is its potential as a source of resources for future space missions. The dwarf planet is believed to contain significant amounts of water ice, which could be used to produce fuel or to support human exploration and habitation of space.
Ceres has no known moons, and its orbit is relatively stable, although it does occasionally come close to other objects in the asteroid belt.
Eris
Eris is a dwarf planet located in the Kuiper Belt, a region of the Solar System beyond the orbit of Neptune that is home to many small, icy objects. It was discovered in 2005 by a team of astronomers led by Mike Brown, and is named after the Greek goddess of strife and discord.
Eris is one of the largest known dwarf planets, with a diameter of about 2,326 kilometers (1,445 miles). It is composed mainly of rock and ice, and has a highly elliptical orbit that takes it from about 5.7 billion kilometers (3.5 billion miles) from the Sun at its farthest point, to about 9 billion kilometers (5.6 billion miles) at its closest point.
One of the most interesting features of Eris is its highly reflective surface, which indicates the presence of a layer of frost on its surface. Eris also has a small moon called Dysnomia, which was named after the daughter of Eris in Greek mythology.
Eris is notable for its role in the reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet. Its discovery, along with other large objects in the Kuiper Belt, led astronomers to rethink their definition of a planet and ultimately led to the reclassification of Pluto.
Eris is too far from the Sun to be visited by any spacecraft in the near future, but continued study of the dwarf planet and its neighbors in the Kuiper Belt may reveal more about the formation and evolution of the Solar System.
Pluto
Pluto is a dwarf planet located in the Kuiper Belt, a region of the Solar System beyond the orbit of Neptune that is home to many small, icy objects. Discovered in 1930, Pluto was long considered the ninth planet in our Solar System, but was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 due to its small size and other characteristics.
Pluto is a relatively small world, with a diameter of about 2,377 kilometers (1,477 miles). It is composed mainly of rock and ice, and has a highly elliptical orbit that takes it from about 4.4 billion kilometers (2.7 billion miles) from the Sun at its farthest point, to about 4.4 billion kilometers (2.7 billion miles) at its closest point.
One of the most interesting features of Pluto is its complex surface, which includes plains, mountains, and canyons, as well as a large heart-shaped region called Tombaugh Regio, named after the astronomer who discovered the planet. The heart-shaped region is made up of a bright, icy material, while the rest of the planet's surface is covered in darker material.
Pluto has five known moons, the largest of which is Charon, which is about half the size of Pluto. The other four moons are much smaller and were discovered in 2005-2012.
Pluto has been visited by only one spacecraft, NASA's New Horizons, which flew by the planet in 2015. The mission provided the first close-up images of the planet and its moons, and revealed many new details about the world, including the presence of ice volcanoes and a hazy atmosphere.
